Danish modern lighting brand, Louis Poulsen, has introduced a whole new color range for its famous AJ Lamp—a collection comprised of table lamps, modern floor lamps, and wall lights. A design first unveiled in 1957, the AJ's 60th birthday presented the company with an opportunity to give the now iconic creation an elegant update, while also paying homage to the lamp's designer, Arne Jacobsen. The new range comprises 7 colorways, described by the brand as both classic and contemporary: dark green, ochre, rust red, midnight blue, aubergine and two grey tones. According to Louis Poulsen, "the colors are closely linked to Arne Jacobsen’s own universe and have been carefully selected on the basis of how the colors best highlight the essence of the AJ lamp."
Arne Jacobsen originally designed the the AJ suite of modern table lamps, wall lights, and floor lamps, for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, where every element in the interior scheme, from furniture to lighting to color palette, played an integral role in the creation of a holistic Jacobsen composition. 60 years on from its introduction, the AJ lamp series remains Arne Jacobsen's most popular modern lighting contribution, eclipsed only by his Mid Century Modern furniture designs. Comprised of two elemental shapes—conical shade and cylindrical socket—the AJ series has a distinctive sculptural profile, while the design's angled light dispersement and directional options render the lamp equally suited as task light or reading lamp.
