Originally designed in 1931, the chair is perhaps the best known and recognised piece of furniture designed by Alvar Aalto. It is named after the town in southwestern Finland for which Aalto designed a tuberculosis sanatorium and all its furnishings. Used in the patients' lounge, the angle of the back of this armchair was intended to help sitters breathe more easily. Armrests birch natural lacquered. Seat shell bent birch plywood, lacquered in white or black.
