Alan Ohashi received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting, sculpture and photography, and a Master of Fine Arts in Cinematography, both from the University of California at Los Angeles. He also earned a Master in Architecture from the University of California at Berkeley. Before launching his architectural career Alan created documentary films and books, and started a community-based, not-for-profit multimedia organization called Visual Communications, which is still in existence today. Alan worked on many award-winning projects at the ELS Design Group and Tanner & Vandine Architects before forming Ohashi Design Studio. In addition to his day-to-day architectural work, Alan has been an instructor and lecturer at UC Berkeley, San Jose State University, and the California College of Arts, where he has taught studio courses on architecture and furniture design. He is an active member of the American Institute of Architects, the Japanese American Citizens League, and the National Japanese American Historical Society.
Joy Ohashi earned a Bachelor of Arts in East Asian Studies from the University of California at Los Angeles, followed by a Juris Doctor degree from the School of Law and a Master in Architecture, both from the University of California at Berkeley. Before forming Ohashi Design Studio, Joy worked at several of San Francisco's top architecture firms, including McCue Boone & Tomsick, Kaplan McLaughlin Diaz, Robinson Mills and Williams, and Holt Hinshaw.
In addition to architecture, Joy's focus is on the interior design projects of the firm, in which she interweaves the architectural "hard" elements with the interior "soft" elements of the designed environment. Her unique expertise in both architecture and interior design sets Ohashi Design apart from its competitors. Joy has been a speaker at numerous functions, including the recent "Women in Design" symposium sponsored by the American Society of Interior Designers.
